WELCOME TO EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY FOR HEALTH PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION (EDUTECH HPE)

ABOUT THE COURSE

Educational Technology for Health Professional Education (EduTech HPE) is an online course for health professionals interested in learning more about how to use technology in their teaching. It focuses on the background, theory and practical application of educational technologies in health professional education. This fully online accredited certificate course is set to launch in Jan 2021, as:

1. Introduction to EduTech HPE (40 hour certificate course)

Approx workload:

2 hrs/month of online synchronous classes

2-4 hrs/month of online collaborative learning/ group work

4 hrs/month of modular learning,videos and homework

If you live in Toronto and are interested in a blended (online and face to face format) graduate level course, please consider viewing our University of Toronto master's course. This second option is run through the Dept of Family and Community Medicine, and is separate from the course below.

OVERVIEW OF ONLINE LEARNING

Pros/cons, types, privacy, copyright and professionalism

SYNCHRONOUS LEARNING AND WEBINARS

This course will provide a framework from which to consider categories of educational technologies and considerations of when and how to best use different modalities. It will also explore the importance and practical relevance of issues such as privacy, copyright, assessment and professionalism and how they need to be considered in an online enviroment

In this course you will consider the advantages and disadvantages of synchronous online learning as well as how to effectively create, facillitate and execute live virtual events. Learners will become comfortable in using Zoom software and presenting a group presentation in this format. Other software such as Adobe Connect, Blackboard Collaborate, etc will also be touched upon.

CONTENT CREATION

Blogs/wikis, video creation and emodules

Learners will build a website to showcase their "educational dilemma"- a problem they would like to solve using technology during the course. They will also build a video, as part of their website. Learners will also be introduced to other software to build emodules, and virtual patients, however, practical know how of this software is beyond the time limits of this course. Learners may choose to build emodules or virtual patients as a separate supervised course.

SOCIAL MEDIA AND COLLABORATIVE ONLINE LEARNING

Twitter, and Slack

Learners will explore the advantages/disadvantages and objectives of using social media such as Twitter and social apps such as Slack to communicate, collaborate and discuss Edutech concepts asynchronously. See for example #EdtechHPE19 #EdtechHPE20.

MLEARNING AND AR/VR

Apps, Mobile sites and Augmented/Virtual Reality

Is there an app for that? Learners will explore and research current mobile applications for healthcare teaching, learning and provision and debate the differences between apps and mobile websites. They will also explore potential benefits of AR/VR in healthcare.

HEATHER MACNEILL

Heather has been creating and researching the effect of educational technologies in healthcare over the past decade and has been teaching EduTech HPE graduate course at University of Toronto since it's inception in 2014. She is Faculty lead, Educational Technologies in the Faculty of Medicine, Office of Continuing Professional Development. She is the recipient of the Fred Fallis and Fox award for her work in the area of elearning, with a particular focus in the area of online collaboration. As a practicing physician at Sinai Health System in Toronto.

KATARYNA NEMETHY

Kataryna Nemethy is an eLearning Developer and Instructional Designer at Baycrest Health Sciences with over 10 years experience in the field of eLearning, instructional design and educational technologies. As a graduate of Biomedical Sciences at University of Toronto, she is passionate about the interface between education, technology and design. She continues to freelance as an instructional designer, eLearning developer and medical illustrator/animator.

TAMARA BAHR

Tamara Bahr is a Faculty Liaison Coordinator, Academic and Collaborative Technologies for the University of Toronto. She has been involved with teaching, learning and technology for health professions education for over a decade.  Tamara recently entered PhD candidacy with the Faculty of Information, University of Toronto where her research lays at the intersection of healthcare professions, education, and technology.
